What is an AI SDR? A plain guide to the category

An AI SDR is software that does the job of a sales development rep: it finds prospects that match your target profile, researches them, writes outreach, sends it across email and LinkedIn, and handles the first reply. You describe the customer you want. It produces conversations, or tries to.

What is an AI SDR?
An AI SDR is software sold as a replacement for the sales development rep role. Not an assistant inside the rep’s inbox, the whole role. You give it a target profile (“VP of Sales at 50-500 person SaaS companies in Europe”) and it runs the motion: sourcing contacts, researching them, personalising a message, sending, following up, and dealing with replies.
The job it replaces is specific. A human SDR turns a list of strangers into booked meetings for account executives: find the accounts, figure out who to contact, write the message, send it, chase the non-responders, and qualify whoever answers.
The qualifying step is where marketing and reality separate. Sending at scale is the part every vendor has built. Handling a reply, qualifying it, and putting a meeting on a calendar is where most products quietly hand back to a human. Find out on the demo which half you are buying.
How does an AI SDR work?
Every product in the category runs some version of five steps.
- You describe the target. An ICP in plain language, or filters: industry, size, region, role.
- It sources contacts. Either from a stored database (Artisan claims 250M+ contacts from 22+ sources, its own figure) or by searching the live web per query, which is Origami’s model. Coverage varies hugely by segment, so test match rates in yours before paying.
- It researches and writes. The agent pulls signals (funding, hiring, tech stack) and drafts a message per contact. This is the step with the biggest gap between demo and reality: personalisation at scale often means the same email with a different first line.
- It sends and follows up. Email, LinkedIn, sometimes phone. The good ones manage the plumbing: mailbox rotation, warm-up, DKIM/DMARC. This matters because Google’s bulk-sender rules apply from 5,000 messages a day and delivery degrades once spam complaints pass 0.10% (Google sender guidelines).
- It handles the reply, or does not. Ask specifically: does it book the meeting, or does it notify someone to book the meeting? Most vendors mean the second. HubSpot’s prospecting agent, to its credit, states its boundary: 30 days of follow-up, then enrolment ends (hubspot.com).
AI SDR vs AI BDR vs AI sales agent: what is the difference?
Mostly labels for the same shelf, but they signal different scopes.
| Label | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| AI SDR | Outbound prospecting specifically: find new contacts, email them at scale |
| AI BDR | The same job. Vendors use the two interchangeably |
| AI sales assistant | Drafting and research help inside a tool a human still drives |
| AI sales agent | The umbrella term: outbound plus inbound plus pipeline work |
One thing worth knowing when you read vendor sites: the AI SDR label took reputational damage in 2025. A TechCrunch investigation into 11x, one of the category’s best-funded vendors, found companies displayed as customers on its site that said they were not customers (TechCrunch, 24 Mar 2025), and its CEO stepped down that May. Since then several vendors have moved to “AI sales agent” or “revenue agent”. The label a company picks tells you roughly when it entered the market.
How much does an AI SDR cost?
Two pricing models dominate: per contact reached, and flat monthly with a contact allowance. Per-seat pricing is rare here, because the pitch is that you are not buying seats. Regie.ai is the exception, and its seat minimums show why.
| Tool | Published price (Aug 2026) | Model |
|---|---|---|
| AiSDR | $250 / $900 / $2,500 per month | Per AI-researched contact, not per seat (aisdr.com) |
| Salesforge (Agent Frank) | $499/mo billed quarterly, $416/mo billed annually | Flat, ~$0.25 per contact; email infrastructure sold separately (salesforge.ai) |
| Regie.ai | $180/user/mo (10-seat min) or $499/user/mo (5-seat min) | Per seat, which prices out small teams (regie.ai) |
| HubSpot Breeze prospecting agent | $1 per recommended lead | Per outcome, requires Sales Hub Pro or Enterprise (hubspot.com) |
| 11x | Growth from $3,750/mo, billed annually | Published Aug 2026; Pro and Enterprise remain quote-only (11x.ai) |
| Artisan | Not published, tiers by leads contacted | Roughly 2,500 (Team) or 6,000 (Scale) leads per month (artisan.co) |
| Needle | Free, then $199 to $1,199 per month | Per agent with usage credits (needle.app/pricing) |
Budget past the licence. Per-contact pricing means the bill scales with exactly the activity you are trying to increase, so the surprise is usually unpredictability rather than the headline number. For a tool-by-tool comparison, see best AI SDR tools.
When does an AI SDR fit, and when does it not?
It fits when:
- Your market is large and your ICP is broad. Volume works across tens of thousands of plausible accounts. It fails on a named list of 400.
- Outbound already converts for you. Automating a motion that works is sensible. Automating one you have never made work produces failure faster.
- You have the sending infrastructure. Separate domains, warmed inboxes, someone watching reputation. Without that, an AI SDR is a machine for burning your primary domain.
- You accept messages going out unread. That is what autonomous means. If your founder wants to see every email, buy a copilot instead.
It does not fit when:
- Your reps already have more leads than they follow up on. An AI SDR manufactures new pipeline. If existing pipeline dies of neglect, more top-of-funnel makes the real problem worse.
- Your market is small and named. In a market of a few hundred accounts, one generic blast can cost you accounts you cannot replace.
- You are buying it to fix reply handling. Most products are weakest there. Test that path hardest on the demo, with a real calendar.
Where Needle fits
Needle does this job with a different bet, and we build it, so read this section knowing that. It is an AI agent in Slack and Teams: you describe your ideal customer, and it identifies matching leads, researches them (funding, hiring, expansion signals), verifies contact details, and drafts the outreach with the rep in the loop.
The difference to the volume tools above is the unit of work. An AI SDR is judged on contacts touched per month. Needle is judged on whether the rep opens Slack to a lead worth their morning: one researched company, a verified contact, and a drafted intro with a reason. If your motion is thousands of cold emails a month, buy one of the volume tools above. If it is fewer, better conversations, pricing is published: free tier, then from $199/mo.
FAQ
What is an AI SDR?
Software that does the job of a sales development rep: it finds prospects matching a target profile, researches them, writes and sends outreach across email and LinkedIn, follows up, and handles the first reply. The genuinely autonomous ones book meetings without a human in the loop.
What does AI SDR mean?
SDR stands for sales development representative, the role that turns cold prospects into booked meetings. An AI SDR is software marketed as doing that role rather than assisting it. AI BDR means the same thing.
How much does an AI SDR cost?
Published prices in August 2026 range from $250 to $3,750 per month, usually priced per contact reached rather than per seat. 11x publishes a Growth tier at $3,750 per month billed annually; Artisan publishes no pricing and routes buyers to a demo.
Do AI SDRs replace human SDRs?
They replace the mechanical parts of the role: list building, first-touch writing, sending, follow-up cadences. In practice a human is still needed daily for list quality, copy review and reply handling, so the realistic framing is fewer SDRs doing higher-judgement work, not zero.
What is the difference between an AI SDR and an AI sales agent?
AI SDR means outbound prospecting specifically. AI sales agent is the umbrella term covering outbound, inbound and pipeline work. The SDR label also carries reputational baggage since 2025, so newer vendors tend to avoid it.
What should I check before buying an AI SDR?
Whether you can review messages before they send, which domains it sends from, real match rates in your segment, whether it suppresses existing customers and open deals from your CRM, whether pricing is per seat or per contact, what happens when a prospect replies, and what happens to a lead nobody answered on day 30.
If you want your leads found, researched and drafted rather than blasted, see what Needle does on your stack.
