Validate Startup Ideas From Web
Scans Reddit, Hacker News, G2 reviews, and Google Trends for real software pain points, then ranks and validates the top ideas with competitive research and market sizing.
Introduction
This workflow helps you discover and validate startup ideas by mining real complaints and software gaps from multiple trusted sources. It scans Reddit, Hacker News, G2 reviews, and trend data, then clusters, deduplicates, and rigorously evaluates the most promising opportunities β outputting a ranked dashboard in Google Sheets with clear build-or-skip verdicts.
It's designed for solo founders and small teams looking for data-driven startup ideas, with a specific focus on the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) market.
What It Does
- Searches Reddit for recent complaints and unmet software needs across subreddits like r/SaaS, r/Entrepreneur, r/sysadmin, r/smallbusiness, and r/accounting.
- Analyzes Hacker News posts and discussions for frustrations with current tools, recommendation requests, and emerging software gaps.
- Scrapes G2 and Capterra reviews to discover shortcomings and missing features in popular business software categories.
- Identifies rising trends via Google Trends and Exploding Topics, focusing on areas with growing demand but limited tool availability.
- Merges, clusters, and deduplicates all findings, compares with historical data from prior runs, and ranks ideas by recurrence and multi-source validation.
- Filters through strict feasibility criteria (solo-dev buildable, monetizable, no regulatory moats, not a commodity).
- Runs deep competitive research, a devil's advocate review, and full DACH market sizing on the top ideas.
- Outputs a ranked Google Sheets dashboard with verdicts, competitor analysis, suggested pricing, estimated Year 1 revenue, and next steps.
Prerequisites
- A Needle platform account with access to AI and search nodes.
- A Google Sheets connection configured in Needle.
- The following tools enabled:
- Needle AI
- Needle Search Internet
- Needle Browse Web Page
How the Flow Works
The workflow runs on a weekly schedule (Monday mornings) or can be triggered manually. It proceeds through the following stages:
| Stage | Node | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reddit Idea Finder | Searches targeted subreddits for posts about SaaS frustrations, unmet needs, and tool gaps. |
| 2 | HN Idea Finder | Searches Hacker News for "Ask HN" requests, tool complaints, and Show HN projects that signal demand. |
| 3 | G2 Review Analyzer | Scrapes negative reviews on G2 and Capterra to find pain points in popular software categories. |
| 4 | Trend Spotter | Explores Google Trends and Exploding Topics to identify rising software needs and regulatory-driven demand. |
| 5 | Historical Data Reader | Reads previous run data from Google Sheets to track idea recurrence over time. |
| 6 | Merge & Cluster | Combines outputs from all five sources into a single input for analysis. |
| 7 | Idea Analyzer | Clusters similar ideas, deduplicates, checks against historical data, and flags ideas as NEW or RECURRING. Produces ~20 unique consolidated ideas. |
| 8 | Feasibility Filter | Applies hard filters (solo-dev feasible, software-only, monetizable, not a commodity) and selects the top 10 ideas. |
| 9 | Deep Research | Runs competitive analysis for each idea β searches for competitors, pricing, market gaps, distribution channels, and GDPR complexity. |
| 10 | Devil's Advocate | Tries to kill each idea by finding failure reasons, hidden risks, and counterevidence. Assigns a survival score and adjusted recommendation. |
| 11 | DACH Market Sizing | For ideas that survived, estimates TAM/SAM in the DACH region, finds example companies, and builds a go-to-market playbook. |
| 12 | Final Scoring & Dashboard | Computes weighted final scores and outputs two sheets: a detailed rankings sheet and an executive dashboard. |
Output
The workflow writes results to two Google Sheets tabs:
Ideas Sheet (Detailed Rankings)
Each row includes:
- Rank and final score (out of 100)
- Problem summary and recommendation
- Time to MVP and suggested pricing
- MRR potential and estimated Year 1 revenue
- Top competitors and their weaknesses
- Suggested USP and moat potential
- DACH TAM estimate and example companies
- Buyer persona, outreach hook, and landing page headline
- Devil's advocate kill argument and confidence level
- Source URLs for validation
Dashboard Sheet (Executive Summary)
Each row includes:
- Verdict: π’ BUILD NOW / π‘ WORTH EXPLORING / π PROCEED WITH CAUTION / π΄ SKIP
- One-liner opportunity description
- Biggest risk and biggest opportunity
- Your first move this week
- Estimated Year 1 revenue
- Build effort estimate
- A summary row with the week's overall findings
Customization Tips
- Target different markets: Edit the AI node prompts to replace DACH-specific queries with your target region.
- Change source focus: Add or remove search queries in the Reddit, HN, or G2 nodes to cover different industries or subreddits.
- Adjust feasibility criteria: Modify the Feasibility Filter prompt if your team is larger or has different constraints.
- Track trends over time: The workflow automatically reads historical data from Google Sheets on each run, so recurring ideas get flagged and strengthened.
Notes
- The workflow excludes promotional content and focuses strictly on genuine user complaints and discussions.
- Searches are tuned to capture the very latest challenges and gaps.
- Always review output manually before committing to development β the scores and verdicts are informed recommendations, not guarantees.
- The scheduled trigger runs every Monday at 6:00 AM (Europe/Berlin timezone). Adjust the schedule in the trigger node as needed.
